BioSignature Modulation

The BioSignature method is a body fat testing technique developed by world renown strength coach Charles Poliquin through over twenty years of research and data collection.  The premise behind BioSig is simple, but effective: where you store fat directly correlates to your body’s hormone levels and those hormone levels can be manipulated through diet and if needed, aggressive supplementation.  Whether your goal is to lose weight, gain weight or just feel and perform better day to day, BioSig counseling...

The Importance of Proper Technique

Posted in WODs

Proper technique, or movement patterns, are the best insurance against injury. The bonus is increased performance. You all hear our instructors repeatedly calling the cues “knees out” or “look up” or “shoulders back”. Those are three of many you hear us harp on constantly. The trend in fitness has been to take all the risk of injury out of an exercise by making it less effective.

The squat is one of the best examples. Many personal trainers teach the squat should never go below parallel and knee should never pass in front of the toes. That’s wrong. As long as we maintain alignment of the hips, knees, ankles, and foot (toes), their body is moving in a structurally sound movement pattern. In real life we squat past parallel and the knee pushes forward of the toes. If we only train to parallel and never allow the knees to move forward, weakness at full range occurs and therefore we have increased the risk of injury…  all in the name of reducing it. What? Yeah…  it can be frustrating.

Here’s an article on the topic from Coach Poliquin…

Get Stronger and Prevent Injury with the Best Movement Patterns

Get stronger and prevent injury by ensuring you always use the best movement patterns for each lift. Poor technique is the most common source of incorrect movement patterns, but fatigue can also alter the way you perform a lift. Incorrect biomechanics can put you or your athletes at risk of injury, compromise strength gains, cause structural imbalances and change soft tissue integrity. To avoid this, program your lifts and energy system training sessions carefully, and be aware of how fatigue will mess with the way you move.

The road back from Thyroid Cancer

Posted in WODs

Cancer Survivor Jude E., Thank you for your story!

The Road Back from Thyroid Cancer

I was elated when I made it through Marine Corps bootcamp.  I’d worked out hard to get ready because I’m not particularly athletic, though I’ve always been active – jogging, martial arts, yoga, walking, swimming. At my best I ran an 8.5 minute mile.  But I made it through and did well. A year into the Marines I started to notice how much harder I had to train to maintain the standards, and not just compared to the men.  I worked out more than anyone in my platoon and ate better by far.  Earlier in life I’d been a vegan for 5 years, so I was used to eating very healthfully.

But no matter how much I trained, how healthy my lifestyle ,I seemed to be slowing down.  No matter how much I ran, the runs got harder.  No matter how much I exercised, I couldn’t get stronger.  At 28, I managed the first class standards only because I qualified as old for a Marine! It was after returning from deployment that I really started to wonder why I was having to work so hard with no results, and why I was so tired all the time. I didn’t know it then that my Thyroid was off.

Your thyroid is your body’s compass and regulator.  The hormones it releases affect nearly every part of your body – brain, muscles, hair, skin and metabolism.  If it’s underactive and doesn’t produce enough hormones, your body slows down and you have symptoms like fatigue, depression, weight gain, and more.  Without medication you’ll just slow down to nothing.  If it’s overactive and produces too much, you tend to lose weight, become hyperactive, can’t sleep, get the shakes, sweats and anxiety and the like. Needless to say, if this organ isn’t working correctly your whole body is off no matter how healthy your lifestyle.

It turned out that not only was my thyroid under active (called Hashimoto’s thyroid disease), but I had two forms of cancer, one in each gland.  The good thing about thyroid cancer is that it’s “the most survivable cancer.”  Yay! Another good thing is that chemo isn’t required, just surgery and ‘radioiodine ablation’ which is a type of radiation therapy.   Unfortunately it was not possible to remove the cancers without removing both thyroid glands, so there went my body’s compass, damaged as it was.

Bugger that a healthy lifestyle did nothing to curtail my odds, but I was very optimistic.  I’d survived the Marines, deployment, and more, I could surely come back from the most survivable cancer.   I was glad to have the support of my husband and family helping me through it.

Fast forward 4 years, last month I finished my inactive reserve status and have remained cancer free. YAY!  Getting the cancer out was just one leg up the hill as it turned out. Finding the balance of the right medication levels has been a real challenge and has taken years.   Creating a new balance after the Marines has had its own challenges, not the least of which is going from training most of the time to – ahhh!  A desk job. Don’t get me wrong, my job is good and I’m grateful I have it, but sitting at the desk you can keep!

These days my focus is on regaining strength and power, and a friend introduced me to Crossfit.   I’m a light-weight these days, but I figure I win if I complete what they tell me to do, just like boot camp only friendly! Here’s mud in your eye, Cancer!

We are thrilled to announce the opening of Wilmington Strength & Conditioning…  Coastal Carolina’s only strength & conditioning facility co-located with a CrossFit affiliate.

Wilmington Strength & Condition is the result of the strategic pairing of CrossFit Wilmington and Next Level Training.  The combined effort has created a facility unlike and unmatched in the region.

CrossFit Wilmington is one of the top CrossFit Affiliates in the world and has been since our inception.  Our values and standards find their roots in the Special Operations Forces of the US Army and US Marine Corps.  It is no coincidence our facility provides the finest General Physical Preparation (GPP) and overall fitness training in the region.  CrossFit Wilmington’s higher standards for programming, instructor professionalism and knowledge, and ethical customer service are proved, time and again, by the results we provide our members and the finishes we gain at competitions.

Next Level Training, led by Coach Jared “Jrod” Olson, is home to over 25 years of experience in the arts of strength and power development.  Their program has produced champion athletes in Powerlifting, Strongman Competition, MMA, Kickboxing, and Olympic Weightlifting.  Next Level’s focus on educating their athletes in technique and the ‘why’ of the programs they use produce measurable results and a “smarter” client.  Jrod is also a Functional Nutritionist that specializes in lab interpretations. As an Advanced BioSignature Practitioner, he specializes in incorporating client’s lab results and BioSignature priorities and their training to yield great results, fast.  James Tatum rounds out the team with expertise in injury prevention, strength balancing and PIMST technique.

One of our core tenets is if you are not growing, you are moving backwards.  In accord with that belief, Wilmington Strength & Conditioning will provide the highest quality strength training available in Eastern North Carolnina.  The operational excellence you know CrossFit Wilmington for, will now be offered in a pure strength and conditioning program.
